South African Cuisine

When I think of African food, I often reflect on my experiences in South Africa. Some of the dishes that come to mind include:

  • Apple Pies: A comforting dessert that combines sweet apples with a flaky crust, often enjoyed warm.
  • Mello Yello and Fanta Drinks: These are popular soft drinks in South Africa, known for their refreshing flavors.
  • Hot Samosas: These are savory pastries filled with spiced potatoes or meats, perfect for snacking. They were sold on the beach with Ice Cold Coke: a refreshing beverage that pairs well with many meals, especially in the warm climate of South Africa. We would hear the vendors yelling, "Hot Samosas! Ice Cold Coke!"
  • Fried Eggs: Made by my mom when I came home from school, cooked with garlic powder.
  • Fried Chicken: We would get it to take out at the Spar strip mall down the road.
  • Polish Sausages: A nod to the diverse culinary influences in South Africa, these sausages are flavorful and often grilled or fried. Our gardener Melton used to eat them for lunch with a 2-liter Coke on Saturdays when he worked for us.
  • Mielie Meal: This is a staple food made from ground corn, often used to prepare dishes like pap or porridge.
  • Biltong: A type of cured meat, similar to jerky, made from beef or game meats. It’s a popular snack in South Africa and is sold on the side of the road.
  • Koeksisters: A sweet treat made of twisted dough that is deep-fried and then soaked in syrup. I did not like it, but Americans would.
  • Cheese Bread: Delicious bread baked with cheese inside.
  • Braai: A traditional South African barbecue that includes a variety of meats, such as boerewors (sausage), steak, and chicken, grilled over an open flame. We had many of these with South African friends.

While my experiences with authentic African food were limited due to the apartheid era, I cherish the flavors I was able to enjoy. Additionally, two more of my favorite South African foods include scampi and shrimp cocktail, which highlight the fresh seafood available along the coast, as well as avocados, known for their creamy texture and versatility in various dishes.

Other Traditional South African Dishes

  1. Bobotie: A savory dish of spiced minced meat baked with an egg-based topping. It often includes ingredients like raisins and almonds, offering a delightful mix of flavors. I have a recipe for this.

  2. Bunny Chow: A unique street food originating from Durban, Bunny Chow consists of a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with curry. This sounds amazing.

  3. Potjiekos: A slow-cooked stew prepared in a cast-iron pot over an open fire. It usually includes meat, vegetables, and spices. I need to try this.

  4. Pap and Chakalaka: Pap is a traditional porridge made from maize meal, often served with a spicy vegetable relish called chakalaka. This dish is hearty.

  5. Vetkoek: A deep-fried bread roll that can be served with sweet or savory fillings, such as jam or minced meat. This versatile food can be a delicious addition to any meal.
