  1. Preheat Oven: Heat the oven to 325°F.

  2. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine:

    • 1 cup packed brown sugar
    • 3/4 cup shortening
    • 1/4 cup molasses
    • 1 egg
      Use an electric mixer on medium speed, or mix with a spoon.
  3. Add Dry Ingredients: Stir in:

    • 2 1/4 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
    • 2 teaspoons baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  4. Shape Dough: Use rounded tablespoonfuls to form 1 1/2-inch balls. Dip the tops into 3 tablespoons of granulated sugar.

  5. Place on Cookie Sheet: Arrange the balls, sugared sides up, on an ungreased cookie sheet, about 2 inches apart.

  6. Bake Cookies: Bake for 13 to 16 minutes until set and cookies appear dry.

  7. Cool: Immediately remove the cookies from the cookie sheet to a cooling rack.
