Preheat Oven: Heat the oven to 325°F.
Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine:
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 3/4 cup shortening
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1 egg
Use an electric mixer on medium speed, or mix with a spoon.
Add Dry Ingredients: Stir in:
- 2 1/4 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Shape Dough: Use rounded tablespoonfuls to form 1 1/2-inch balls. Dip the tops into 3 tablespoons of granulated sugar.
Place on Cookie Sheet: Arrange the balls, sugared sides up, on an ungreased cookie sheet, about 2 inches apart.
Bake Cookies: Bake for 13 to 16 minutes until set and cookies appear dry.
Cool: Immediately remove the cookies from the cookie sheet to a cooling rack.
