 Molasses Cookies

  1. Preheat Oven: Heat the oven to 325°F.

  2. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, beat together:

    • 1 cup packed brown sugar
    • 3/4 cup shortening
    • 1/4 cup molasses
    • 1 egg
      Use an electric mixer on medium speed or mix by hand.
  3. Add Dry Ingredients: Stir in the following:

    • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
    • 2 teaspoons baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  4. Shape Dough: Use a rounded tablespoon to form dough into 1 1/2-inch balls.

  5. Sugar Coating: Dip the tops of the dough balls into 3 tablespoons of granulated sugar.

  6. Place on Sheet: Arrange the balls, sugared side up, on an ungreased cookie sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

  7. Bake: Bake for 13 to 16 minutes, or until the cookies are set and appear dry.

  8. Cool: Remove cookies immediately from the sheet and place them on a cooling rack. Enjoy!
