Biscuits Preparation Directions
Gather Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
- 2 tablespoons baking powder
- 1 scant tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 5 tablespoons cold, unsalted butter
- 1 cup whole milk
Preheat Oven:
- Set the oven to 425°F.
Mix Dry Ingredients:
- Sift together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
Process Butter:
- Transfer the mixture to a food processor. Cut butter into small pieces, add to the flour, and pulse 5-6 times until it looks like rough crumbs.
- Alternative: Cut butter into the flour in the mixing bowl using a fork or pastry cutter.
Form Dough:
- Return the mixture to the bowl, add milk, and stir with a fork until it forms a rough ball.
Knead Dough:
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and pat it into a rectangle about 1 inch thick.
- Fold it over and gently pat it down again. Repeat this step.
Rest Dough:
- Cover the dough loosely with a kitchen towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.
Shape Biscuits:
- Pat the dough into a rectangle roughly 10 inches by 6 inches.
- Use a floured glass or biscuit cutter to cut out biscuits. Do not twist the cutter.
Bake:
- Place biscuits on a cookie sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes until golden brown.
