 Classic American Buttercream Frosting Recipe

This frosting is perfect for decorating cupcakes and cakes.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks or 1/2 pound), softened (like ice cream)
  • 3-4 cups sifted powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon table salt
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • Up to 4 tablespoons milk or heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Beat Butter: In a mixer with a paddle attachment, beat the softened butter on medium speed for 2-3 minutes.
  2. Add Sugar: Gradually add 3 cups of sifted powdered sugar while mixing on the lowest speed to prevent a sugar cloud.
  3. Mix Ingredients: Once combined, increase the speed to medium. Add the vanilla extract, salt, and 2 tablespoons of milk/cream. Mix for 3 minutes.
  4. Adjust Consistency:
    • For a stiffer frosting, add more powdered sugar.
    • To thin the frosting, add remaining milk, 1 tablespoon at a time.
